With her big wide smile and calm demeanour, it probably won't surprise you that Dr Nicola Abbott, FACD, MBChB, BSc, was attracted to medicine for as long as she can remember. A true Bay Of Plenty indigene, she was born and bred in Tauranga, living there until she left college to head for our student capital.
After completing her Bachelor of Science and subsequently earning her medical degree from Otago University in 2007, she returned home and spent her first year as a Doctor at Tauranga Hospital. Subsequently spreading her wings, she spent the next few years in Queensland, during which time she settled on her speciality of choice. Though her genuine interest in people initially led her towards psychiatry, Nicola had grown up with a strong family history of eczema and a resulting fascination with skin. Enjoying the complex, broad nature of the dermatological sciences, it was a natural choice in the end.
Her training spanned four years across the major tertiary Hospitals in Brisbane and Wirral in the U.K., including 18 months researching moles and publishing her findings in multiple international journals. She joined the Australasian College of Dermatology in 2012, was awarded a Fellowship of the Australasian College of Dermatologists in February 2016 and gained invaluable expertise as a consultant Dermatologist in the Gold Coast.
Nicola's love of New Zealand and family remained strong, so when a close relative became unwell, the decision to return home was a simple one. This resolution had the fortuitous consequence of granting our local community the benefit of her significant talents, and she now forms a vital part of the incredible team of life-saving practitioners at Skin Centre. Her interest lies in all aspects of Dermatology, including medical dermatology, rashes, skin cancers, and surgery.
Highly enthusiastic about her chosen profession, Nicola's biggest reward comes from observing those patients who achieve a dramatic improvement in their quality of life through effective treatment. In line with Skin Centre's culture, one of Nicola's stand out traits is her ability to listen well,. She strives to meet her personal daily goal of ensuring her patients feel relaxed and at ease. Like her colleagues, she has an appreciation for down to earth personalities and those who show respect for others.
Adding some excitement to her homecoming, is the impending birth of Nicola's first child in May 2017. While this means her passion for sports will take a small hiatus, she keeps active and fit, still walking The Pinnacles six months into her pregnancy. Nicola is at her happiest in the outdoors, priding herself on maintaining a positive outlook and always living life to the full.
