Botox/Dysport

Botox, Dysport and Botulinium Toxin Treatments

Ageing in the face is inevitable. The good news is you can reverse and delay the effects quite easily, and without the need for surgery.

Botox, Dysport and Botulinium Toxin treatments are our most popular procedures at The SkinCentre, will enhance and rejuvenate your face. Dysport is a brand name and is a direct competitor to the Botox product, Botulinium Toxin in the generic name of the treatment that is used in these treatments.

With 17 years in appearance medicine treatments, you can be confident you are in capable hands at The Skin Centre. They are an extremely effective and easy way of removing frown lines and crow’s feet. Tiny amounts of Botox or Dysport are injected into the muscle affecting these facial lines.

Within days of having the injections, the muscles in the area relax – making your frown lines and crow’s feet flatten and look smoother. The effect of this treatment will continue with the injection of Botox two or three times a year.

These treatments are intended to enhance and refresh your looks and will only relax muscles beneath the facial lines at the point of injection, so that other elements of facial expression remain active. If you choose not to have further treatments, your muscles will eventually return to normal activity and your facial lines will gradually revert to their pre-treatment levels.

Botox or Dysport treatments are very different to dermal fillers, including those that are made from naturally occurring sugar gels. In the case of dermal fillers, they are injected below the skin to fill in lines and replace or enhance facial volume in areas such as the cheeks or lips.

Botox, Dystport and Botulinium Toxin treatments are fast, simple to have and very effective – and they are more common than most people realise. More and more people are acknowledging publicly their use of this treatment- it is no longer taboo or only an option for the celebrities. Botox and Dysport are now common everyday treatments that many of us are using to reduce the signs of ageing and those tired ‘grumpy’ frown lines. Some of us love the completely unlined face and others prefer a softer approach to simply lessen some lines. At the Skin Centre we tailor the look to your needs.

What does Botox/Dysport treat?

These treatments are used to reduce dynamic lines and wrinkles that form in the upper face.

As we age, changes occur at different rates to our upper, mid and lower face. In the upper face, ‘dynamic’ lies appear in the forehead and around the eyes when we smile or frown. These lines appear because various muscles contract to form different facial expressions. Over time, these expression lines begin to linger a little longer or become a little deeper, even when your face is at rest (these are called static lines). Botox/Dysport relaxes wrinkle-causing muscles to help refresh your facial appearance.

What is Botox?

Botox is a natural, purified protein that relaxes wrinkle-causing muscles creating a refreshed look. Botox treatment’s active ingredient is derived from the Botulinium Toxin bacteria in sterile laboratory conditions in much the same way penicillin is manufactured from mould. As it is a prescription-only medicine, Botox treatments are only available from qualified medical professionals.

What is Dysport?

Dysport is a brand name and is a direct competitor to the Botox product, Botulinium Toxin in the generic name of the treatment that is used in these treatments.

How do they work?

Botox treatment works by relaxing facial muscles that cause dynamic lines when you smile or frown. Botox is registered for treatment of crow’s feet, forehead lines, and glabellar frown lines – those vertical lines that appear between your eyebrows when you frown.

What do the treatments involve?

These treatments are quick, simple, non-surgical procedures. During treatments, a small amount of Botox or Dysport is injected into specific facial muscles with a very fine needle. They generally take around ten minutes. Typically any pain is minimal and brief. No anaesthetic is required, and you can resume normal activities immediately. It is important to follow any aftercare instructions your clinician at The Skin Centre gives you.

When will I see the Results?

Generally people start to see results within 1-2 days of their treatment and it can take from 10-14 days for full results to be visible.

How long will the results last?

The effects of Botox/Dypsort treatments usually last up to four months and gradually decrease over time. If you have regular treatments the effects may last longer.

How do I maintain the Botox results?

Regular treatments may help improve the longevity of the treatment’s effects. In addition, regular treatment may help reduce static wrinkles – those present even when your face is at rest. Your clinician at The Skin Centre may discuss a treatment plan for regular treatments.

Are there any side effects?

In the treatment of upper facial lines, the doses of Botox/Dysport that are used are small. In the majority of cases, any side effects are temporary and limited to where Botox/Dysport was injected. Possible side effects include pain, burning or stinging; bruising, swelling or redness at the injection site; local muscle weakness including drooping eyelids or eyebrows; swollen eyelids and skin tightness; tingling sensations, itching or aching forehead; headaches, nausea and flu-like symptoms. If you have any concerns about side effects, talk to your clinician at The Skin Centre.

Can Botox/Dysport be combined with other products and procedures?

Many people combine these with other cosmetic treatments such as dermal fillers (which replace or enhance volume under the skin) and skin treatments that help skin texture, tone and quality. Your clinician may discuss an individual treatment plan to help you reach your facial enhancement and rejuvenation goals.
