Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in New Zealand

There are several different types, but generally they occur on sun damaged skin. It is important to remember that not all skin cancers are the same and every patient is unique.

Your Specialist at the Skin Centre will discuss what treatment options are available for the type of skin cancer you have and advise which treatment is best for you.

Having a Skin Check? – What to expect

The nurse will show you into the consultation room and discuss the process and ask you to wear a gown. You are welcome to have a chaperone present during the examination or we can provide you with one should you wish.

The doctor will take a history including enquiring about any lesions on your skin you are concerned about. They will then examine your skin from top to bottom under magnification and discuss their findings with you and provide education to protect your skin for the future.

If a sample of a lesion is required (biopsy), often this can be performed on the day or it can be arranged for a convenient time.
